Tears are flowing like an endless rain into a paper cup, from the first day till the last day of the shoot, not only theirs but mine also. I asked short questions and they open up automatically, and shared their whole life story.
All these Ibu2, these powerful women ranges from victims of structural violence, domestic violence, economic violence, but everyone keeps their hearts open and tender.
Every single one is capable of griefing and articulating their feelings. From one that are forced to work as an adult entertainer, to the one who got beaten by a motorcycle gear by her ex-husband, to those who have lost their loved ones. Not everyone speaks Bahasa Indonesia, but I could understand everything they said from their heart. My jobdesc feels upgraded lately, just to listen, deep listening even if the words don't really make sense. Not a Docu director anymore, just a Docu listener. Listening is more important than directing.
I am grateful can listen to all single one of these stories. Everyone keep the stories and their source of happiness intact inside their hearts. They don’t make themselves numb.
In this documentary series, they let the memories and stories alive through food, through the recipes passed down for hundreds of generations. Keeping the indigenous wisdom alive and well.
