A Tale of the Stolen River

2025 · 28 min · Director · Indonesia

Syamsiah and Pandi live a simple, fulfilling life in Sepaku, East Kalimantan — until construction of Indonesia's new capital city begins to reach their land and their water. Not an advocacy film but a reflective one: an invitation into the daily rhythm of two people as the ground shifts beneath them.

Director's statement. I grew up in Bontang, East Kalimantan, about two hundred kilometres from IKN Zero Point, inside a gated housing complex built by the fertiliser company my parents worked for — fenced, guarded, and almost entirely Javanese. The local children, mostly Bugis and Dayak, rarely came to our school, and when they did they were treated as second-class students. Displacement was the water I swam in before I had a word for it.

The headlines about the new capital are about water use, wildlife and planning failures. This film is not about those. It follows what the Balik people actually live through — the feelings, the daily routine, the nightmares — and asks the viewer to sit inside that rather than be argued into a position.

A political and ecological meditation. Everything in this universe is berkesalingan — mutually conditioned — and the film follows that thread through a life lived in and around politics.

Sebuah meditasi politik dan ekologis. Segala hal di semesta ini berkesalingan — saling mensyaratkan — dan film ini menyusuri benang itu lewat satu hidup yang dijalani di dalam dan di sekitar politik.

Director's statement

Most people see life as a line: a moment where it appears, and a moment where it stops. Another way to look at that line is as an accumulation of dots — each an independent moment arising and passing away. There is no line, no past, no future; only dots appearing and fading. That is what we call the here and now.

Love Birth Life is an honest observation of Freya Light, a single mother who learns to let go of her life into the present moment in order to birth her baby at home, without a partner's support. Her journey is a reminder of the sacredness of the mother–infant relationship at birth: that succession of dots, that succession of love, the continuation of life.
