The Kawah Ijen Warriors
Eighty-seven photographs on the labour and hopes of the sulphur miners of Kawah Ijen, made with Tim Tanah Air for International Labour Day.
Kawah Ijen is an active crater in Banyuwangi, East Java, where men carry baskets of raw sulphur up and out of the caldera on their shoulders, several times a day. The exhibition was made for International Labour Day: not a spectacle of hardship, but a record of work, of the bodies that do it, and of what the men hope for.
